This week, the High Block LEGO team, our enthusiastic group of six 11-year-olds, had another exciting and productive team meeting in preparation for the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Regional Tournament. With the competition just around the corner, the team focused on four major topics to ensure they are fully prepared for both the Innovation Project and Robot Design presentations, as well as the robot game itself.
Preparing for the Oral Presentations
The meeting kicked off with a discussion on how to prepare for the oral presentations. The team brainstormed and refined their ideas for presenting both the Innovation Project and the Robot Design to the judges. Everyone participated actively, offering suggestions on what content to include and how to make the presentations clear and engaging. It was a great display of teamwork, as every member contributed their ideas and helped polish the plan for presenting their work.
Planning the Final Share Presentation
Next, the team turned their attention to the “final share” portion of the competition. The discussion was lively and fun, with many out-of-the-box ideas being suggested. Team members clearly enjoyed exploring creative ways to showcase their project, and the collaborative atmosphere sparked even more innovative ideas than expected.
Designing Board Posters
A crucial part of presenting at FLL is having clear and visually appealing board posters. The team brainstormed ideas for what to include on their posters and how to design the layout effectively. Today, our LEGO builders became “artists,” proposing brilliant concepts and carefully considering how to make their boards both informative and visually striking. The discussion highlighted everyone’s creativity and attention to detail.
Robot Game Practice
Finally, the team dove into practicing for the Robot Game. According to FLL rules, each team competes in three preliminary rounds, each lasting 2 minutes and 30 seconds, with up to four members allowed at the table during a match. To optimize their performance, the six team members divided into three subgroups (Teams A, B, and C) and practiced task delegation and collaboration. During the practice rounds, they identified areas for improvement and made adjustments to both the robot and its programming. The practice was intense, productive, and also a lot of fun, giving the team confidence as the competition approaches.
Overall, this week’s meeting was a huge success. The High Block team showed outstanding collaboration, creativity, and dedication. With each meeting, they continue to grow stronger as a team and get closer to presenting their best work at the FLL Regional Tournament.
